Dean L. Winters, age 77, of Kellogg, died of cancer early Sunday, September 2, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born August 14, 1935 in Winona, the son of Eugene and Alberta (Peterson) Winters.  He served in the US Navy from 1956-1960 and then he began his career with the US Army Corps of Engineers.  He worked 30 years for the Corps, working as a derrick boat operator.  He retired in 1990.  He married Teresa Drazkowski May 5, 1962 in Blaine, MN.

He was a member of Weaver United Methodist Church and a life member and past Veterans Service Officer for the Kellogg American Legion Post #546.  Dean was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.  He also loved the outdoors, especially hunting turkey and deer, and searching for morel mushrooms and wild ginseng.  He especially loved his grandkids and great-grandkids and his dog, Bubba.  

Dean is survived by his wife, Teresa Winters, Kellogg, MN; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Denise Winters, Wabasha, MN; daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Kevin French, Lebanon, TN; six grandchildren, Tina, Tyler, Amber and Jon Winters and Jake and Josh French; three great-granddaughters, Aleiah Rick, Emmalia Winters and Melanie Winters; brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Gwen Johnson, Kellogg, MN; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marion and Donald Beckman, Blaine, MN, Arlene and Edward Hielscher, Wabasha, MN, Sandy and Don Harlow, Kellogg, MN; nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and nephew, Joe Harlow.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 11:00am at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha with Mr. Keith Mercer officiating.  Military rites will follow at the funeral home with the Kellogg American Legion Post #546 providing the honors.  Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5-8pm and one hour before the service on Wednesday.  In keeping with his desire to be helpful and always wanting to do more, his body will be donated to the Mayo Clinic Anatomical Bequest Program following the services.
