Ruth T. Strand, age 85, of Wabasha, formerly of rural Nelson, died Monday, October 1, 2012 at St. Elizabeth’s Health Care Center.
Ruth was born August 10, 1927 in Buffalo County, the daughter of Oscar and Sarah (Torgerson) Brommer. On October 15, 1955, Ruth was united in marriage to Thomas Strand at the Church of Christ in Nelson. Tom preceded her in death in 2006. Ruth was a homemaker on their family farm.
Ruth will be remembered for her faith in God and as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered as a faithful lady that taught and transported many children to Sunday school at the Church of Christ in Nelson for over forty years. In her later years, she found great joy and love from her grandchildren.
Ruth served on the Town of Nelson Board and later served on the Buffalo County Board. She was one of the first women in the State of Wisconsin to serve as Board Chair. She was an advocate for the elderly and compassionate to those in need.
After their retirement from farming, Ruth and her husband enjoyed traveling to different parts of the world including Norway, Israel and Egypt. Ruth was proud of her Norwegian heritage and was a member of the Mondovi Chapter of the Sons of Norway.
Ruth will be sadly missed by daughters and son-in-laws, Deborah and Michael Smith, Wabasha, MN, Barbara and Richard Morrison, La Crosse, WI; four grandchildren, David and Sarah Smith, Wabasha, MN, Daniel and Kathryn Morrison, La Crosse, WI; sister, Lucille Baader, Urne, WI; brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Blanche Brommer, Lake City, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother-in-law, Earl Baader, and parent-in-laws, Henry and Olga Strand.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2012 at 11:00am at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha. Burial will follow at the Nelson Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:30-8pm and on Friday one hour before the service.
