Gary E. Meyer, age 74, of West Newton, rural Kellogg, and formerly of Rochester, died Monday, March 12, 2018 after a 27 month battle with cancer with his loving wife at his side.  He was born June 23, 1943 in Spring Valley, MN, the son of Otto and Helen (Rollie) Meyer.  He was raised in Wykoff on the family farm near Forestville.  He graduated from Wykoff High School and the attended Austin Vocational-Technical Institute for draftsman and design.  He worked as a draftsman/designer for IBM in Rochester beginning in 1964 later working as an engineer, retiring in 1995.  He then drove truck for Monson Trucking of Red Wing for one year.  In 1997 he returned to IBM working part-time until retiring again in 2009.  In retirement he drove for a limousine service in Rochester, he drove buses for the Head Start program in Rochester and he drove school buses in Wabasha. 


He married Devonna (Breuer) Dexter, of Oronoco, in 2001 at Buena Vista Park overlooking the Mississippi River above Alma, WI.  They thoroughly enjoyed spending their retirement years together living at their home on the backwaters of the Mississippi River.

In his earlier years Gary was a member of both the Byron and Stewartville Jaycees and he was a longtime member of the Stewartville Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing, hunting, travelling, boating, camping and snowmobiling.  He was a dedicated family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Gary is survived by his wife, Devonna Meyer, Kellogg, MN; son, Bradley (Pam) Meyer, Clearwater, MN; daughter, Kristin Meyer, Mahtomedi, MN; step-daughters, Desirae (Nick) Pegram, Oronoco, MN, Michelle Walker, Orlando, FL; step-son, Dustin Walker, Orlando, FL; four grandchildren, Adam (Lunden) Meyer, Rachael (Dacota) Weinzetl, Evan and Will Christensen; two step-grandchildren, Tristyn and Kylee Pegram; sisters, Marcine (Jerry) Allen, Rochester, MN, Michelle Meyer, Dodge Center, MN; brother, Roger (Mary) Meyer, Wayzata, MN; nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Helen Meyer and his grandparents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 11:00am at Faith Lutheran Church in Wabasha.  Family and friends may call at Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha on Friday from 5-8pm and at the church on Saturday one hour before the service.  Interment will be at Cross of Christ Cemetery at Welch, MN at a later date.
