Peggy Hartert Oates

May 11, 1959 ~ May 18, 2019 (age 60)

Peggy Hartert Oates, age 60, of Vancouver, WA, formerly of Wabasha, passed away May 18, 2019 at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center in Portland, OR after a ten year battle with ovarian cancer.  She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.  She was born May 11, 1959 in Wabasha to Leigh and Joni (Kalmes) Hartert.  Peggy was a 1977 graduate of Wabasha-Kellogg High School and later attended Rochester Vocational and Technical College.  During her time in Wabasha she worked for Slippery’s, the Wabasha County Recorder’s office, and later the Gartner Law Office in Lake City until moving to Vancouver, WA in 1987.  She then worked for Richard Deich Law Office in Portland, OR before she became ill.

 She married Paul “Pete” Oates August 28, 2004 in Kalama, WA.  Peggy is survived by her husband, Pete; stepson, Joe; her parents, Leigh and Joni Hartert; and her six siblings, Cheri (Glen) Dick, Jerry (Cindy) Hartert, Denny (Christine) Hartert, Ed (Mary) Hartert, Leigh Hartert, Jr. and Jodie (Matt) Schmoker; aunts, uncles, many cousins and many nieces and nephews that she adored.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

 Peggy will be remembered for being a fun, loving friend who lived her life to the fullest.  Peggy and Pete enjoyed traveling across the United States and cruising to warm climates.  She had a love for her cats, gardening, canning, and going to estate sales to find that perfect treasure that she shared with many.  Peggy was an avid Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings fan as well as the Seattle Seahawks.

 A prayer service to celebrate Peggy’s life will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 3pm at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg.  Officiating will be the Reverend Father James Russell.  A private interment service of her cremated remains will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minneiska at a later date.  Family and friends may call at St. Agnes Catholic Church on Sunday, June 23, 2019 from Noon until 3pm.  Following the service a reception to further celebrate her life will be held at the Front Porch in Kellogg.

 In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Hiawatha Animal Humane Society, PO Box 215, Lake City, MN  55041 or the American Cancer Society, 411 2nd St. NW, Rochester, MN  55901. 

 “You’ve only got three choices in life - Give up, Give in, or Give it all you’ve got”.  Peggy chose to give it all she had.
