Regina F. Jahnke, age 100, of Pepin, died peacefully early Monday, August 7, 2017 at Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 24, 1917 in Allamakee County, Iowa, the 11th of 12 children born to John and Henrietta (Ried) Glaus. The family moved to rural Plum City, WI when she was a little girl.
She married Lloyd Jahnke in Plum City in 1935. When first married they lived in Minnesota City where Lloyd worked clearing timber for the dams being built on the Mississippi River. They returned home, farmed in the Plum City and Arkansaw areas and then moved onto the Herman Jahnke farm in Hicks Valley, outside of Pepin where they lived for several years. Eventually they moved into Pepin and she was offered a job in the kitchen of the Pepin School District. She eventually became the head cook for the District, working there for 30 years. She retired from the school in 1984 to care for her husband who was diagnosed with cancer. Following his death she then held a few part-time jobs, namely the A & W and the White House Café in Pepin and the Nelson Café. She also helped friends diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, doing household chores, cooking and baking. She finally retired at the age of 85 after working 12 years for the Green Thumb program at the Pepin Depot Museum and the senior meal site in Pepin. She moved from Pepin to the Seasons Senior Living in Plum City in 2009. In 2013 she lived at the Plum City Care Center.
Regina had many interests and hobbies throughout her life. She enjoyed bowling in Wabasha, playing cards, playing piano by ear, and singing. She loved having music playing in her home. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, needlework, sewing and volunteering at Pepin Manor. She enjoyed travelling, growing flowers and vegetables in her gardens, canning and even making homemade wine.
Regina is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Holmes, Duluth, MN, Judy and John Kircher, Eau Claire, WI, Jackie and Tom Bjork, Beaver Dam, WI and Jane and Tim Murray, Pepin, WI; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, son, L. Michael Jahnke, grandson, John D. Kircher, great-grandchildren, Olivia Seymour, Charles and Cora Weil, great-great-granddaughter, Evalyn Gow; son-in-law, Gene Holmes, seven brothers and four sisters.
A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11:00am with the Reverend Father Gregory Parrott officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Pepin, WI. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday one hour before the Mass.
